Ch 6.3: Analyze the civil rights movement and the effects of the Civil Rights Act of 1964.

How would you describe, explain, and give an example for this learning objective?

  1. After the Brown vs. Board of Education Court Case, African American students attended a public school in Little Rock, Arkansas. These students tested the law and tried to push integrated public schools. Rosa Parks also decided to challenge the law by sitting in the front of a segregated bus. She was arrested and thrown in jail for her "illegal" act. Many attempts to desegregate the nation led to the Civil Rights Act of 1964. Congress outlawed segregation in public facilities and discrimination in employment, education, and voting.

  2. The Civil Rights Act of 1964 gave all citizens the right to public establishments. Equal employment rights were also granted and described in the Civil Rights Act. The act also restricted the government from funding programs that were discriminating other groups. Voting rights were also outline briefly.

    1. The Equal Protection clause of the 14th Amendment was violated in the Brown v. Board of Education case. The ruling of which stated segregation in schools is unconstitutional paved the way for future integration movements.

  4. An example of the effects of the Civil Rights Act of 1964 is the Brown v. Board of Education. The Court ruled that racially segregated systems must be “dismantled with deliberate speed”
