Ch 6.6: Evaluate the ongoing debate concerning civil rights and affirmative action.

  1. Affirmative Action is policies designed to give special attention or compensatory treatment to members of a perviously disadvantaged group; However, Affirmative Action continues to be very controversial. In addition, many groups have yet to reach full equality.

  3. Two very different examples for this section are the following court cases In 2003 Grutter v. Bollinger the court had to decide whether or not to uphold the policy to show preference toward minorities. The other view is that in 2003 Gratz v. Bollinger, the court were debating whether or not universities were not allowed to give minorities automatic points for simply being a minority

  4. There are citizens that argue affirmative action is unconstitutional. If law are not allowed to discriminate, they should not help a racial group or others groups either. By selectively helping, there is a sense of discrimination against the groups not receiving benefits. They suggest the Constitution should view everyone as equal
